The design of the Nelson Residence has evolved naturally from the original concept sketch away from the idea that buildings serving different functions gather around a central courtyard. The courtyard is still the focus of the home, but now its design has become more abstract than literal with buildings lying parallel along a northwest axis toward the view of the bay.
